San Felipe Del Rio CISD Student Receives
2019 Student Hero Award
The State Board of Education Student Heroes Program recognizes Texas public school students in prekindergarten through high school who do outstanding works of service to benefit their fellow students, schools, and their communities. Students who earn this award have voluntarily completed a work of service or good deed and the service, assistance or good deed must benefit other students in Texas, either individually or collectively and may have served to benefit students of one campus, a school district, or a community. One student from each of the 15 State Board of Education (SBOE) districts is recognized for this award.
San Felipe Del Rio CISD is proud to announce that Hitzel Medrano, a sophomore at Del Rio High School, is the recipient of the 2019 Student Heroes Award by the Texas State Board of Education District 1. An immigrant from Mexico, Hitzel is being recognized for her role as a valuable member in her sophomore class despite her minimal English language knowledge. It didn’t take long after entering her English II and Creative class for the first time that Hitzel began assisting as a reading and writing mentor to other ESL students. Mrs. Luann Viesca, Hitzel’s English II and Creative Writing teacher recently discovered that Hitzel also guides and mentors ESL students in her other classes. She states, “Her dedication to her education and the community is admirable and an inspiration to others. Although the English language is difficult for her, she is excelling because she is driven to success.”
Hitzel will receive a plaque from our SBOE district member, Ms. Georgina Perez. A special award presentation will take place during the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees on Monday, May 20that 6 p.m. at the Student Performance Center Auditorium.
