School Health Advisory Council

What Is SHAC?

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice and recommendations to the SFDR-CISD administration on aspects of the school district’s health program. The members of the SHAC are appointed by the School Board of Trustees.

What Does the SHAC Do?

The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive school health program.  The components include:

  1. Health instruction
  2. Healthful school environment
  3. Health services
  4. Physical education
  5. School counseling
  6. Food Service
  7. Health promotion for staff
  8. Integrated school and community programs

The local SHAC duties include recommending:

  1. The number of instructional hours to be provided in health education
  2. Health education curriculum appropriate for specific grade levels that may include a coordinated health education program
  3. Instruction to prevent the use of tobacco and drugs
  4. Appropriate grade levels and methods of instruction for human sexuality education
  5. Any other school/community health issue the SHAC finds necessary to address

Mission Statement

The purpose of our schools is to provide a comprehensive educational opportunity that encompasses the intellectual growth, emotional health and physical wellness of our students, families, employees and community in a safe and nurturing environment. It is the SHAC’s goal to empower SFDR-CISD students, families, staff and community to actively participate in the safety, health and education provided in our community through strong leadership, open communication and advocacy for continuous improvement.

Meeting Dates

All meetings are held at the SPC Administration Training Room on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30p.m. and the dates for this school year are as follows:

November 10th
January 5th
February 23rd
April 6th
May 11th
June 19th is the presentation of the year overview to the School Board.

 

Operating Procedures

  1. Membership: 
    The School Board shall select members of the SFDR-CISD SHAC to hold a term of two (2) years.
     
  2. Leadership:
    The SFDR-CISD SHAC will have three officers. These are the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Recording Secretary.  These officers will hold terms of two (2) years and will be nominated on an alternating basis.
     
  3. Developing the Agenda:
    The SFDR-CISD SHAC Chairperson will set the agenda for the meetings.  If a member would like something placed on the agenda, they will need to notify the chairperson two weeks in advance. The recording secretary will email the agenda to the membership one week prior to the meeting unless an emergency meeting is to be called.
     
  4. Conduct Meetings:
    Meetings are to be held at least twice a year or more often at the discretion of the council chair.
     
  5. Voting:
    Voting on issues will be done by a quorum of at least five (5) voting members with a simple majority passing/failing the issue.  In the event there is not five (5) members present, the issue will be tabled until a quorum is met.  If a member has a concern with an issue that has been addressed, a narrative summary of those concerns will be added to any information that is released to the board or other entity following district policy.
     
  6.  Request for Information or Complaint:
    The SHAC member will tell the person that has requested the information or lodged the complaint, the chain of command to follow. Referral of these requests and complaints are to be given directly to the SHAC chairperson.  The Chairperson will keep a record of all complaints and requests to give to the SHAC during the next scheduled meeting.

Wellness Policy

One of the responsibilities of the SHAC is to assist in the development of  district nutrition guidelines and wellness goals that are also in compliance with, or exceed, state and federal regulations.  These guidelines should advance student health and reduce childhood obesity and promote the general wellness of students through nutrition education, physical activity, health safety awareness and other school-based activities.
